Big Playground for Little Builders

Kids are often fascinated by toy trucks and construction machinery.

As parents, we know that these toys contribute significantly to our children’s physical and cognitive development. They help kids develop fine motor skills, spatial awareness, confidence and problem-solving skills. This in turn helps to prepare the child for school, sports and life.

Imagine: if you and your child now have the chance to operate the real thing in a safe guided environment, wouldn’t it be fun?

We speak to Mr Edwin Lim, an engineer and a father himself, who turned that imagination into reality with an extraordinary playground for little ones.

1. We hear you are an advocate of STEAM learning. Share with us your thoughts as an entrepreneur and a father.

Diggersite aims to integrate education and entertainment to allow all our customers to learn through play. This unique edutainment concept aims to stimulate one’s interest through our carefully crafted activities engaging everyone at Diggersite. Our objective is to unleash all potential and inculcate the attitude to keep exploring!

2. Could you tell us a little about yourself, and what motivated you to start this unusual venture?

I am a civil engineer by profession and father of two. One of my main objectives is to show that excavators are not just for blue-collared workers and much skills are needed to operate them effectively.

I also want Singapore kids to be exposed to and enjoy outdoor, experiential activities and physical machines in this digital age. This in turn will help in enhancing their senses, motor skills and develop patience, willingness to learn and perseverance that will help them cope with life.

I have this concern for the future of our younger generation, Singapore has emerged from being a third to a first world country and fortunately our lives have improved a lot since then. However, I hope that even if Singapore faces new challenges in the next few decades because of the arising power of China, our kids will still be able to adapt to the changes. I was stationed in Cambodia and Vietnam for more than a decade and have seen children having the ability to adapt to different environment. Hence, letting our kids experience playing in a different environment and putting their creative minds into playing machinery will eventually help them to understand the lives of others and be able to cope with tough situation.

3. How has the response been like so far? What do you think is the appeal?

Public response has been heartwarming since we started in 2016. Both local and international guests have been giving us positive feedback. We have regular guests including kids who know our exact processes from putting on safety vests, helmet vests to operating our small scale machines. They definitely feel very happy and comfortable at Diggersite. We have customers who gave positive feedback that Diggersite knows how to set a high benchmark that is beyond their expectation.

We are also glad that many schools like our idea. We regularly organise field trips for various schools across Singapore. Teachers are keen on the idea of bringing their students out of their usual air conditioned classrooms to enjoy outdoor activities and enhance their motor skills.

4. What can a child look forward to at Diggersite?

Generally, kids go to Diggersite to experience and learn how to operate small scale construction machines. In addition, it is the fun and happy atmosphere that Diggersite provides which makes children feel comfortable and that makes them want to come back for more. We treat everyone like family. Duration of each visit usually varies from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the package they purchase. In terms of safety, we regularly maintain our machines and there are staff at all times ensuring customer safety and meeting their needs. Below are the machines available at Diggersite. Kindly take note that due to space limitation, not all are available at some of our mall branches.

CRANE - a type of machine that can be used to lift, lower materials and move them horizontally. It is mainly used for lifting heavy things and transporting them to other places. At Diggersite, there are 2 types of cranes and placed in 1 station each:
A. Ball Grabber – the goal of the crane operator is to grab the balls and drop them in the tyres or on the slides
B. Tower Crane – the goal of the crane operator is to place yellow metal blocks in the tyres vertically.

EXCAVATOR - a construction vehicle used to excavate or move large objects. At Diggersite, the goal of our excavator operator is to dig sand then dump it in a bucket or pail.

WRECKING BALL - a heavy steel ball, usually hung from a crane that is used for demolishing large buildings. At Diggersite, the operator will need to hit/knock down the bottles that act as buildings.

LOG GRAPPLE - applied mainly in general deforestation. Objective is to load and unload logs and tree branches. At Diggersite, there are 2 type of log grapples (in 1 station):
A. Log Loading - the operator will pick up the logs and load it in a wheel barrow
B. Log Bowling - the operator will pick up the logs then drop it in a metal ramp to hit the bottles at the end of the ramp.

MINE TRACTOR - a type of vehicle used to transport mining materials such as coal, gold and other minerals. At Diggersite, it is used as transportation for kids and parents to roam around Diggersite premises.
