Terms & Conditions

    a) Kode It, Sparkies! 2018 is a competition ("Competition") jointly organised by Kodecoon and Times Experience, a subsidiary of Times Publishing Limited ("Organisers").
    b) This Competition is a national hackathon competition, aimed to drive technical and design creativity in our next generation adolescents. This competition capitalizes on solving potential national concerns and portraying a solution through a web display. Participants are challenged to a phase of innovation and the familiarization of programming languages.
    c) The Competition aims to achieve the following objectives for the participants:
        i) ADAPT - To adapt in the digital age by embracing technology.
        ii) TRANSFORM- To transform by picking up programming skills and sharpening problem-solving capability.
        iii) BREAKTHROUGH- To create technological breakthrough that is impactful and relevant to the society.

    a) To join the Competition, the participant must:
       i) currently be a student in primary 3 to 6 (or an equivalent grade as stated in the reference table below) residing in Singapore.
       ii) have the permission of a parent or guardian.
    b) Students from international schools in Singapore may participate.

    a) The registration period to enter the Competition is from 23 April 2018 to 13 June 2018.
    b) Early bird registration closes on 31 May 2018.
    c) Registration can only be submitted online through www.happysparks.com/kodeitsparkies2018.

    For the registration to be valid:
    a) The registration form must be completed in full, including name of participant, contact details and all other required information.
    b) Payment of registration fee must be made in full during registration.
    c) The parent/guardian must have a Times Connect account to proceed with the above registration steps.

    a) Registration fee for each participant is
       i) $15 (early bird: register by 31 May 2018), or
       ii) $20 (normal: register from 1 June to 13 June 2018).
    b) Times Privilege members enjoy a special rate of $10 (early bird) or $15 (normal).
    c) Payment of registration fees is to be made online through the registration website via credit card.
    d) All fees indicated are quoted in Singapore Dollars and are inclusive of 7% GST.
    e) Payment of registration fees is non-refundable.

    a) A complimentary boot camp (worth $230) on learning the basics of coding will be available to participants of the competition on a first-come first-served basis.
    b) It is compulsory for all participants to attend the boot camp before they can proceed to the competition.
    d) The boot camp is scheduled to take place on 16 and 17 June 2018 at Times Centre, 1 New Industrial Road, Singapore 536196. Participants are required to be present on both days of the boot camp.

    a) At the end of the boot camp, the instructors will group the students into teams to compete at the Competition.
    b) For the Competition, each team will choose a topic from a list provided by the Organiser.
    c) The theme of the Competition is "Smart Nation" (how technology can make life better), and "Problem Solving" (how an existing mobility or living situation can be improved).
    d) The specific question will be released to the teams on the Competition day.

    a) The Competition will be held on 24 June 2018 at Our Tampines Hub, 1 Tampines Walk, Singapore 528523 as part of the Happy Sparks event organised by Times Experience.
    b) All participants must bring along a photo ID for registration purposes.
    c) On the Competition day, each team will present their ideas and solutions based on the topic they have selected, using a website that the team has designed and built on BSD LaunchBox, an educational platform taught to the students during the boot camp.
    d) Laptops will be provided to all teams.
    e) The top three teams will be shortlisted to make their presentations on the main stage to the live audience at the event.
    f) Our panel of judges will pick the best team as the overall winner of the Competition.
    g) The decision of the judges for the Competition will be final and no correspondence will be entertained.

    a) Photographs and videos of participants may be taken at various stages of the Competition and boot camps. By entering the Competition, participants have given their consent to be featured in these photos and videos which may be used for marketing purposes by the Organisers.
    b) By entering the Competition, participants agree that the content of their speeches may be used and reproduced in any form by the Organisers.

    a) Each participant in the overall winning team will receive a certificate and prizes from our kind sponsors.
    b) The Organisers reserve the right to abandon or withdraw any aspect of the prizes at any time.
    c) All prizes are not transferable or exchangeable for cash or otherwise. If for any reason any prize becomes unavailable, the Organisers may substitute an alternative prize of equivalent value without notice.
    d) By claiming the prizes, all winners give consent to the Organisers to use their names, photographs and videos for publicity purposes.

    a) The personal information provided to enter this Competition will be held by the Organisers and will be used for the purposes of administering the Competition.
    b) By providing the Organisers with their personal data, all participants agree that the Organisers may collect, use and disclose their personal data for purposes in accordance with the Privacy Policy and the Personal Data Protection Act 2012.
    c) The Organisers reserve the right to contact participants and associated persons using information obtained in relation to the operations of the Competition.
    d) By entering the Competition, participants consent to the use of their personal data by Times Publishing Limited and its subsidiaries (including Times Experience and Times The Bookshop) as well as Kodecoon for marketing and promotional purposes.

    a) The Organisers shall not be liable for any loss, damage, personal injury or death whatsoever (including but not limited to indirect or consequential loss) which is suffered or sustained arising out of or in connection with the Competition and the taking or using of the prizes.
    b) Where goods or services are supplied by third parties, the Organisers shall not warrant the quality of those goods and/or services or the suitability for your particular circumstances.

  13. OTHERS
    a) The Organisers’ decisions on all matters regarding the Competition are final and no correspondence will be entertained.
    b) The Organisers reserve the right to extend, cancel or amend the Competition or any component of the Competition at any time.
    c) Information on how to enter and the prizes to be won forms part of these Terms and Conditions. Entry into the Competition constitutes acceptance of these Terms and Conditions.
    d) The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entertained.
    e) Participants who breach these Terms and Conditions are subject to disqualification.
