Maths Guru

This nationwide inter-school mathematics competition for Primary 5 students showcases their ability in solving questions that require higher-order problem-solving and thinking skills. The questions are provided by Marshall Cavendish Education, our official education consultant. Catch the young numerates in action and be amazed at their speed and accuracy in solving problems on the tablets provided by Samsung, our official technology partner. You might learn a thing or two from these 11-year-old maths gurus!

Highlights of the competition, a showcase event at Happy Sparks, will be filmed and broadcast on MaxToon, a dedicated Mandarin edutainment channel for kids on StarHub TV.

How is the game played?

Round 1: Qualifier

Participating schools slug it out in a 60-minute challenge of accuracy and speed to secure one of 10 places to qualify for the chance to be Times Experience’s inaugural Maths Guru.

Round 2: Semi-final

The battle heats up as the 10 qualifying teams engage in a fastest-finger-first contest on stage in a gruelling elimination round that will leave only two teams standing.

Round 3: Final

The nail-biting final pits the top two teams in a battle where each individual member takes on another from the opposing team in a contest to determine the winner.



Each of the five students on the winning team will receive S$300 cash, a medal, a certificate, an Eu Yan Sang hamper worth S$100 and a Pilot Pen hamper worth S$50. The team will also be presented with a trophy.

Dr Spario Soon

Dr Spario Soon is the founder and chief consultant of Learning InterActive Pte Ltd, an education service provider specialising in mathematics products and enrichment services. He has served as a consultant for various educational institutes and organisations, advising on programmes and curriculum.

Dr Lee Ngan Hoe

Dr Lee Ngan Hoe is an Assistant Professor and Assistant Head in the Mathematics & Mathematics Education Academic Group at NIE. Previously a mathematics teacher and Gifted Education Specialist, he now trains mathematics teachers. He has co-authored two primary mathematics packages, Shaping Maths and Maths Works, which are used in schools here and as resource books for mathematics teachers. He is interested in the teaching and learning of mathematics at primary, secondary and pre-university levels.


Gurmit Singh

A television actor and host of over 20 years, Gurmit Singh has hosted the ‘President’s Star Charity’, ‘Singapore Idol’, the ‘National Day Parade’ and other variety and lifestyle shows. He is most well-known for the role of Phua Chu Kang which clinched him the Best Comedy Actor award at the Asian Television Awards five times. He is now semi-retired so he can spend more time with his family.
